German-born Walter moved to South Africa in 1967. A mechanical engineer, he got his start in the crane industry shortly thereafter, working initially as a designer before moving into a sales position with Liebherr. Walter purchased MES in 1986. At the time, the company owned just two cranes. Four years later, the Liebherr plant in Alberton was added to its portfolio.
Today, he is a well-known figure and name in the crane industry with a solid track record and reputation.
Walter was swift to identify the potential of the rental market, and his decision to change the company’s model reaped rapid rewards. His ability to recognise and leverage opportunities proved invaluable in the long-term and ongoing success of MES.
Walter continues to play a hands-on role in MES, overseeing all aspects of operations as he works alongside new team members to pass on his extensive skills and knowledge. His meticulous nature and emphasis on thoroughness ensures that the company’s solid track record is primed for further development into the future.
